A Couple of other events for the calendar

AIPP Commercial NSW presents “ Quote to stay afloat” 7th October 2009

As a part of the regular events in NSW, AIPP are holding an evening workshop to discuss how photographers quote for commercial work.

There will 3 jobs available on the night covering a range of commercial activity. All attendees will be asked to put in “the numbers” anonymously on the night for these 3 scenarios. We will then take a break while the numbers are collated and then a panel of experienced commercial shooters will discuss the inevitable range of prices that will come up, as well as discussing broader issues with quoting and estimating. There will be time for Q+A. The session will be chaired by Ross Eason www.eason.com.au , an experienced commercial shooter from Queensland.

AIPP Commercial will also be launching a brand new AIPP publication for your commercial clients “The WhyWhoHow Book“ and we’ll be discussing the strategy behind this publication.

A lucky door prize will be presented on the night.

Sun Studios Lighting workshop for Assistants

Best be quick on this one...

Hi,

Sun Studios would like to invite interested assistants and emerging photographers to a free lighting workshop. The workshop will be held by the photographer Sam Borich, and will explore what to do when you're given a big brief but only a small budget. Sam will show you tricks on how to get similar results to more expensive lighting set-ups with much cheaper materials. We'll look at ways to get several different looks out of just one expensive light. We'll also explore the advantages and disadvantages of using just one pack and three heads versus several Monoblocks. We'll also give you an idea of how much everything being used would cost to hire so that you can budget for future shoots.

The workshop will be held on the 6th of July 2009 at Sun Studios. It will start at 10am and will run for a couple of hours.

The first twelve responses will reserve a space. If you can't make it to this one, don't worry as we will hold more!

RSVP to tamzin@sunstudiosaustralia.com.

Feel free to forward this e-mail onto anyone you think may be interested.

Many thanks,

Tamzin.

The role of a Photographer's personal work

Kat Dalager Interview_Personal Work Question from Andrew Kamin on Vimeo.
quick vid from the humble monkey website

The Front Supports Assistants

The very generous people at The Front have not only come on board as Sponsors for the Projections Competition/event happening in May but have also offered assistants free equipment rental if you refer a photographer you are working with to the front and they rent gear from the front.

This is the email Tim sent me
"The Front would like to offer assistants something new in terms of a positive approach to equipment rentals.

Where we can we like to help out assistants with tests and now we have come up with a plan to really emphasise the importance of testing for new talent in photography.

The Front will grant assistants free use of gear for tests in return for referral of equipment rental jobs. So, essentially this means that any equipment rentals that are put through The Front by assistants entitle them to completely free test gear. Simple as that really: get your photographer to rent from The Front and we will duly pay you back with a negotiable quantity of gear. Choose from The Front’s meticulously kept camera, lighting, and grip equipment, then get out there and shoot!

Assistants can now achieve those tests that were once over the horizon financially and hopefully expand those important future-working relationships.

The Front aims to encourage assistants to get behind the lens.
Just call in to the gear room at 966 Elizabeth St. Zetland or give the guys a buzz on 8399 0027 to further discuss the offer."

I know how hard it can be sometimes to organise equipment and studio space to continue learning and build your book by doing test shoots. Big thanks to the guys at the front for offering all sydney assistants this opportunity.

What to charge

After a recent conversation with someone about what to charge I'd thought I'd post this link to various resources and a few different bits of software photographers can use when preparing quotes for jobs. If there is a single area of your business you really need to have a solid understanding of, it's what to charge when quoting on jobs. Here is the link thanks to David Bean for posting them on flickr .
